New
York, NY - Over the evenings of June 10, 17, and 24, 2007 at
The Stone, the creative music ensemble Ne(x)tworks
presents Ne(x)tworks 2007: At The Stone, six discreet
programs of new material that further develops the distinctive
repertoire and collective energies of this group of "new music
superstars." (Time Out) This series of performances represent
the group's second annual residency in New York. The first, entitled
SILOMUSIC
(Issue Project Room, Spring 2006), initiated several streams of
aesthetic activity which At The Stone continues. Primary
to each area of interest is the exposition of various types of
notation (graphic, strategic, hybrid, etc.) and the improvisative
interpretations they engender. The repertoire at The Stone features work
by New York musical legends and contemporary stalwarts such as
Jon Gibson, Anthony Coleman, Leroy Jenkins, Arthur Russell, Michael
Schumacher, and many by Ne(x)tworks members (Joan La Barbara,
Kenji Bunch, Shelley Burgon, Miguel Frasconi, Yves Dharamraj,
Cornelius Dufallo, and Ariana Kim).
Ne(x)tworks' trombonist Chris
McIntyre, curator for The Stone during the month of June, took
the lead in programming repertoire for the '07 residency. The
opening event (6/10) features the ongoing Ne(x)tworks tradition
of all first-performances of works by ensemble members.
Began in 2003, the Ne(x)tworks Composers Series
differentiates this group from many others, and is at the core
of its interest in collective interpretation.
For the programs on June 17
and 24 McIntyre capitalizes on that interest, drawing a line from
seminal "open works" of the 1950's and 60's to notational experiments
found in various musical cultures of the 70's and 80's. The first
program, titled Dialogics (6/17), features several
works by legendary compser/performer Jon Gibson (who will also
perform), recently passed composer/violinist Leroy Jenkins, Julius
Eastman's now-classic Stay On It, and pop/experimental
iconoclast Arthur Russell.
The line continues through
Innerlogics (6/24), connecting newly composed works
by sound artist Michael Schumacher and Ne(x)tworks Director Cornelius
Dufallo with works by Xenakis, group member Joan La Barbara, and
composer/trombonist Peter Zummo. |
